٢٦ كانون الأول ٢٠١٥تعرّف وثيقة الأمم المتحدة للمستوطنات البشرية في نسختها الثالثة المساحات العامة بأنها: أماكن غير ربحية يمتلكها العامة أو مفتوحة ومتاحة للعامة ويمكن أن يستمتعوا فيها بحرية. علاوة على ذلك، تشدد هذه الوثيقة على ثلاثة أمثلة وهي: الشارع والأماكن المفتوحة والمرافق العامة. هذه المساحات تذكر مراراً وتوضح تكراراً دون الأخذ بالاعتبار الاختلافات الشاسعة الموجودة بين مكان عام في أوروبا ومكان عام في الهند وآخر في الخليج. إضافة لذلك، فإن للمساحات العامة طابع سياسي لا يمكن تجاهله، ومن هنا يأتي السؤال: ما هي طبيعة المساحات العامة في مجتمعات رأسمالية حديثة تفتقر للشفافية ومهووسة بالخصوصية؟ قد تكون هناك ساحات عامة في هذه المجتمعات غير الشوارع والأماكن المفتوحة، ويجب أن يعاد إعادة النظر فيها في توصيات الأمم المتحدة بهدف الحصول على وثيقة أكثر شمولاً، والوصول لمثل هذه الوثيقة بلا شك يشكل تحديا بحد ذاته نظراً للمجتمعات المتعددة والمتنوعة التي  تتعامل معها الأمم المتحدة. ومن هذا المنطلق فإننا ندعو للتأمل والتفكر في الطرق المتبعة في تشكيل المساحات العامة في البحرين وإمكانية إعادة تشكيلها.

Public Space [Re]Formations

Public spaces are defined within the UN Habitat III documents as spaces that are publicly owned or for the public, accessible and enjoyable for free and without profit motive. Three examples are emphasized on, which are streets, open spaces and public facilities. Throughout the document these spaces are mentioned and elaborated on however the nature of a public space in Europe is not the same of one in India neither of another in the Gulf. Additionally public spaces are in many ways political in nature, therefore a question rises, what is the nature of a public space in young democratic capitalist societies that lack transparency and are obsessed with privacy. These spaces might be something beyond the streets and the open spaces and should be reconsidered within the UN recommendations in order to have a more inclusive global document, which without doubt is a challenge to create given the diverse contexts the UN deals with. Therefore we shall reflect on the means of formations and possible reformations of public spaces in Bahrain.
