تواريخ المدن ما بين الماضي المؤلم والمستقبل المنتظر

الحرب العالمية الثانية كان لها تأثير كبير على المدن بما في ذلك - على سبيل الحصر - التدمير العسكري الذي حفز الفنانين ومخططي المدن على تقديم تصورات شكل المدينة في المستقبل. العديد من هذه التصورات والمخططات اعتمدت على موروثات الحركة الطلائعية (في كافة المجالات الفنية و الثقافية و غيرها) في فترة ما بين الحربين، ولكن هذه الحركة أصبحت حينها تعمل في بيئة مغايرة لتلك الموجودة قُبيل إنتهاء الحرب العالمية الثانية، ففي تلك الفترة بات مفهوم المدينة ما بين تجريد لمستقبل الحداثة العالمية وما بين تحليل التاريخ في محاولة لفهم أسباب وتقديم حلول لتحديات فترة ما بعد الحرب. بعبارة أخرى كانت المدينة ما بعد الحرب على مفترق طريق، فمن ناحية قد يؤدي الطريق لمحو التاريخ وتجاهله ومن ناحية أخرى قد يؤدي الطريق إلى الإلمام بالتاريخ وترسيخه في الذاكرة، مما يخلق بيئة خصبة للتفكير في العلاقة ما بين الأرشفة والذاكرة. هذه المحاضرة تبحث في معاني ذاكرة المدينة وتتساءل عما قد يعنيه الحفاظ على المدينة كأرشيف استنادا على أعمال فنانين ومخططين من مدينة نيويورك وبرلين الغربية وطوكيو.

The City as Archive
Urban Histories of Traumatic Pasts and Imagined Futures

WWII had a profound impact on cities—including, but not limited to, military destruction—that spurred artists and planners on to reimagine urban landscapes of the future. Many of these representations and plans drew on the legacies of the interwar avant-garde, but they were operating in a fundamentally changed environment after WWII. The perception of cities at the time was torn between the abstractions of a future-driven universal modernism, and historical analyses that aimed at understanding causes of, and solutions to postwar challenges. In other words, the postwar city was at the crossroads of a historical amnesia and a historical awareness of the past, making it a rich environment for thinking about the relationship between archives and memory. Drawing on the work of artists and planners in New York City, West Berlin, and Tokyo, this talk investigates notions of urban memory, and questions what it means to preserve the city as an archive.

مكتبة قطر الرقمية هي بوابة رقمية رائدة في القرن الواحد والعشرين، توفر إمكانية الوصول لمجموعة واسعة من مواد التراث الثقافي والمخطوطات التاريخية المتعلقة بدولة قطر ومنطقة الخليج والشرق الأوسط بشكل عام للجميع و دون قيود، مكتبة قطر الرقمية دشنت في أكتوبر ٢٠١٤م كشراكة ما بين مؤسسة قطر ومكتبة قطر الوطنية والمكتبة البريطانية. تهدف مكتبة قطر الرقمية لرفع مستوى الوعي ومعرفة أكثر دقة عن تاريخ العالم الإسلامي وعن التراث الثقافي العربي والتاريخ الحديث للخليج، وتخدم المكتبة الباحثين والأكاديميين والطلبة حول العالم المهتمين بتاريخ المنطقة. إن مكتبة قطر الرقمية تتماشى مع مهمة مؤسسة قطر التي تعزز بناء مجتمع رائد و فعّال يُقدر الموروث الفكري والثقافي ويهتم بالتعليم والمعرفة مما يتماشى مع رؤية قطر الوطنية ٢٠٣٠.

The Qatar Digital Library Portal

Qatar Digital Library (QDL) is a world-class, 21st century online portal that provides users worldwide free access to an extensive collection of historical archival items and manuscripts related to Qatar, the Gulf region and the wider Middle East. Launched in October 2014, QDL is the result of an ongoing partnership between Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, the Qatar National Library (QNL) and the British Library. QDL aims to raise awareness about, and foster a better understanding, of the Islamic world, Arab culture and the Gulf region’s history. It also serves as a valuable resource to academics, researchers, students and the wider global community. The QDL is in line with the Qatar Foundation’s mission to foster a progressive, engaged society that is appreciative of its heritage and traditions, and is interested in furthering learning and knowledge in support of the nation’s priorities as set out in Qatar National Vision 2030.

تتكون هذه اللجنة من فريق من المهنيين الشباب من كل من البحرين والكويت والدوحة وجدة، يناقشون فيما بينهم محاولتهم لتكوين أرشيف حول المدينة التي يسكنونها والتحديات التي يواجهونها، وتهدف هذا الجلسة أن تخلق فرص للتعاون ما بين المشاركين.  كل من المشاركيين يعمل على مستوى مختلف ومن خلال وسائل متباينة وبإستخدام طرق مختلفة. من بين أعضاء الجلسة من يجري بحوثه على مدينته فقط ومنهم من يتجاوز حدود الدولة خالقا علاقات إقليمية من خلال عمله في الأرشفة. سيستعرض كل من في اللجنة  طريقة مختلفة للأرشفة مثل التاريخ الشفوي والتصوير والرسومات المعمارية ومجموعات الكتب. علاوة على ذلك فإن الوسيلة المستخدمة لتوصيل المعلومات المكتسبة والتوقيت المحدد للقيام بذلك يمكن أن يختلف من شخص لآخر بناء على تقديره الشخصي. سيتحدث المشاركون حول قيمة وأهمية تكوين أرشيف للمدينة والروايات التي يصنعونها والطرق التي يتبعها كل منهم

Urban Archival Practices in the GCC

This panel brings together young practitioners from Bahrain, Kuwait, Doha and Jeddah to discuss urban archival efforts in their cities to share experiences, challenges that they face and to start building a strong network between the participants. Each of the participant works on archiving at a different scale, through different mediums and using different processes. Amongst the panelists are those who focus on a city while others go beyond country borders creating different regional connections through their practice. The processes of archiving differ and are diverse, for example oral history, photography, architectural drawings and book collections. Furthermore the medium used to communicate the archival material with the public and the chosen timing to do so can also vary from one practice to another. This panel looks into the value these practices are adding, the narratives created and the methods followed by each of the participants.

المحرق: جزيرة في مرحلة انتقالية

تطرق هذه المحاضرة إلى التغييرات التي طرأت على جزيرة المحرق خلال السنوات الماضية، فاليوم المباني الشاهقة تحيط بالقرية وتقلل من إنفتاحها، والشوارع التي كانت تتناسب مع مقياس الشخص والمنازل المجاورة لها تم إستبدالها بشوارع واسعة مجهزة للسيارات، وفي الآونة الأخيرة بدأ برنامج ثقافي جديد يطرأ على الجزيرة، كل هذه التغييرات أدت إلى إعادة هيكلة النسيج الحضري للقرى مما يؤدي لتساؤلات حول ضرورة رسم حدود واضحة بين القرية والتوسعات الجديدة إستجابة لتحفظات أهل القرية فيما يخص مخاوف ضياع الهوية. في زمن التحولات تتصاعد توترات حول الحفاظ على الهوية المتوارثة أو إتخاذ هوية جديدة غير واضحة المعالم.

Muharraq: an Island in Transition

The talk explores the changes in the island of Muharraq that have occurred rapidly within the past years; the openness of the urban fabric of the village is now surrounded by clusters of high-rise buildings, the small pedestrian roads and adjacent houses have been displaced by roads wide enough to accommodate the car and lately a new cultural agenda has been introduced to the city of Muharraq. These new developments in the island of Muharraq have taken a rapid pace and have restructured the urban fabric of the villages and as a result some are questioning the necessity of developing borders between the villages and their new extensions in response to concerns in regards to identity amongst those living in the villages. In times of urban transitions tensions arise in regards to building upon the identity of a known past or moving towards an unknown identity of the future.
